【Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam】
About the Project
Our fourth overseas educational and cultural exchange project was a Flag Garland mural at Trung Tâm Giáo Dục Dạy Nghề Thiếu Niên (Vocational Education Center Youth City) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The mural title is “Beautiful Name – FLAG GARLAND MURAL”. During March 7-9, fifty (50) children and twenty (20) adults participated in making this mural.
All children have beautiful names. This Chara-Rimpa project highlighted the beauty of each child’s name to compose a mural artwork. The children drew-designed their names and then painted them on the walls. The gymnasium walls were filled with garlands of the children’s name designs, each one painted in a triangular flag shape with vivid colors.
We also painted Chara-Rimpa mural characters on various buildings within the orphanage compound. The themes of the characters were inspired by Ho Chi Minh City. Each child chose one mission card that showed a theme related to the city, such as the banyan tree, ‘pho’ noodle soup, bicycle, ‘ao dai’ traditional dress, lotus flower, and so on. The children created their own characters based on the mission cards.
